Description

New Old Stock Premium Quality Nasu Eggplant Brand Nasu-jirushi 270 mm Ryoba Saw . Nasu Brand refers to

Nasu Jirushi Hamono Seizou Honpo was a traditional Japanese maker of high end hand tools and edged tools who have long been closed.

This lovely tool features a 270mm blade with one side for cross cutting and one side for ripping. The razor sharp blade is still covered in the original factory oil type rust preventative and is in lovely condition with a very crisp clear stamp of the Trademark Eggplant. The handle is excellent with the exception of a few dings from decades of storage and a hairline split in its end and up one side for about 4". This actually appears to me to be a manufacturing defect . It could easily be filled with some white glue as it is the width of a hair and very hard to see( I have taken close-ups) . The handle is traditional paulownia wood that has a very coarse grain texture that looks like it is striped and provides an excellent grip. The handle still retains the original paper label. The saw also includes the original and hard to come by protective case with logo.

By stamping their tools with the eggplant, the company intended to convey unfailing reliability and absolute utility—a guarantee that, just like the flower of the eggplant, their blades would never fail to yield a perfect result. It was a massive statement of pride and confidence in their craftsmanship, which is why the logo often stands completely alone on the steel without the company name.

Nasu Jirushi tools were forged using premium materials designated for elite-level Japanese cutlery. Vintage examples of their Kanna (woodworking planes) and specialty tools frequently feature Yasuki Aogami No. 1 (安来青一号 / Yasuki Blue Paper Steel No. 1)

  • Properties: Blue Paper Steel is highly alloyed with tungsten and chromium, making it exceptionally wear-resistant and capable of holding a razor-sharp edge longer than standard carbon steels.

  • Target Audience: This tier of steel requires high skill to forge and sharpen, cementing the brand's alignment with masters (Miya-daiku or temple carpenters and expert woodworkers) rather than hobbyists

  • Nasu only sold tools directly to guilds or specialised master-craftsman distributors rather than retail storefronts, they never launched a website. These tools were made by Japanese Master Craftsmen for Japanese Master Craftsmen. They were intended to be sold in North America.
